Terminology

Blades 101:  Arm yourself with knowledge!



Steel Blades

Dagger Blade - 12 inches long, 1 1/8 inches wide, tapering to 1/2 of an inch at the tip. These blades have a flattened diamond cross section. The tangs are threaded with 1/4 x 20 threads.

Main Gauche Blade -  
17 inches Long, 1 1/2 inches wide, tapering to 1/2 of and inch at the tip. These blades have a rectangular cross section at the ricasso, and a flattened diamond cross section down the main portion of the blade. The tangs are threaded with 6 mm x 1 metric threads.

Schlager Blade (Rapier) - 35 inches long, 3/4 of an inch wide, tapering to 3/8 of an inch at the tip. These blades have a flattened diamond cross section. The tangs are threaded with 6 mm x 1 metric threads. Also called Mensur blades.

Musketeer Blade (Rapier/Smallsword/Single Sword) - 35 inches long, 7/8 of an inch wide, tapering to 1/4 of an inch at the tip. These blades have a triangular cross section with a shallow concave fuller on the underside of the blade. The tangs are threaded with 6 mm x 1 metric threads.

Epee Blade (Smallsword/Single Sword) - 35 inches long (#5 blade), 7/8 of an inch wide, tapering to 3/16 of an inch at the tip. These blades have a triangular cross section with a deep 'V' shaped fuller on the underside of the blade. The tangs are threaded with 6 mm x 1 metric threads.

Single-Hand Broadsword Blade - 28 inches long, 1 3/8 inches wide tapering to 5/8 of an inch at the tip. These blades have a flattened hexagon cross section, parallel sides with beveled edges. The tangs are threaded with 5/16 x 18 threads.

Hand-and-a-Half Broadsword Blade - 34 inches long, 1 1/2 inches wide tapering to 3/4 of an inch at the tip. These blades have a flattened hexagon cross section, parallel sides with beveled edges. The tangs are threaded with 5/16 x 18 threads.


Aluminum Blades

Aluminum blades are made from 7075 aircraft alloy. Blades are threaded either 5/16 x 18 for Rapiers, Daggers, and Cutlasses, or 3/8 x 16 for Broadswords.
